The interview with this internationally recognised band, I was told, was to take place in an ‘exclusive’, ‘invite only’ location. The pressure to ‘be cool’ was on. We were met by John and Jono from the band and led down to an underground cavern adorned with lights, a drum kit and amps. As we sat having a cup of tea, we were told that this is a place that has seen legendary DJ Steve Lamacq punched in the face and a pint poured over him, accidentally of course, but still. One group of four lads in particular have made this basement their home, and that group is The Violet May.

Having only seen The Cremorne depicted on a dark and dingy advert in Exposed magazine, I was a little apprehensive when Richard from Bijon Freece suggested meeting there. However, after bumbling in from the cold Sheffield weather I caught up with Richard, Tom and Karl from the band to talk spray painted dogs, their Oscar dreams and playing at the top of a snowy mountain.
Hi guys, let me start with a question many people hearing your name probably wonder. It’s quite an unusual one, Bijon Freece, is there a story behind it?
Richard: We were just racking our brains to come up with a name.
Tom: It’s a small, poodle type dog. They were used as an item of barter for sailors in the olden days. They’ve got a happy disposition so they enjoyed having them on the boats.
